Plan B/Julie work best when taken as soon as possible following unprotected sex.
Plan B and Julie are less effective if you weigh 165 lbs or more, but can still be taken within 72 hours. ella is another emergency contraception pill that can be effective for up to five days, but it requires a prescription from a doctor. If you weigh 195 pounds or more, ella won’t be as effective. Regardless of weight, it is only recommended that you take one dose.
If you’ve had gastric bypass surgery, oral birth control methods and emergency contraception will be ineffective due to the malabsorption mechanism present after surgery.
Whatever your weigh, getting certain IUDs as emergency contraception works within 120 hours (5 days) after having unprotected sex. This is the most effective type of emergency contraception. An IUD has to be put in by a doctor, nurse, or other health care provider.
Plan B / Julie are over the counter medication that can be bought without an ID and are legal in all 50 states. Emergency contraceptives are not abortion pills. Read the back of the box or resources linked above for further information.
We are not medical providers (either RFFNH or any host site). If you have concerns about a medicine you are taking potentially interacting with emergency contraception, please consult with a pharmacist or medical provider.
